Movie review: Another Cinderella Story
A different sort of post, but I just finished watching the aforementioned movie and felt like doing a review, so here I am. So Another Cinderella Story is yet another cliched teen flick about an oppressed (but startlingly pretty once she puts on a dress, although she looks gorgeous in sweats anyway) girl who finds Prince Charming and ends up happily ever after.
Not going to lie to you, the plot is predictable and expectedly boring, but the movie (astonishingly) isn’t horrible. The only thing that kept it up were the supporting characters. More on that later, I want to first talk about the main characters.
Selena Gomez is cute as the main character and she’s a good dancer. The whole movie is about how her Prince found her when they danced together at the masked ball, but surprise, the two actually spent time getting to know each other, which I found convincing enough for a romance movie. (I hate love-at-first-sight premises.) There were a few cute moments here and there. Drew Seeley isn’t exactly the best lead guy, however. Firstly, he isn’t good-looking enough. Sure, he has a good voice and slick dance moves but he doesn’t exude the charm, sensuality and/or masculinity that other leading men like Zac Efron or Chad Michael Murray (in the first Cinderella movie) had. Secondly, the chemistry between him and Selena – entirely not there. There was no heat, nothing. I felt as if they were simply dance partners. Drew Seeley isn’t a convincing charmer.
So the leads were disappointing but the supporting cast, I absolutely adored! Jane Lynch was perfect as the evil step-mother. Her smarmy comments were evil and Sue-Slyvestereque. I snickered at every comment she made (“You’re showing off, Mary! Stop showing off!”). She wasn’t entirely convincing as a washed-up pop star but made a good evil step-mother. The best friends roles were nicely played. The two best friends of both leads were great – I really liked them!
Expectedly, the high school bitch were flanked by the evil step-sisters. The step-sisters were just crazy, not evil – just crazy. No other way to describe them. They were just plain freaky, man!
So yeah, that’s my review. Predictable plot, blah dancing, but awesome supporting cast. Jane Lynch FTW!
Now I’m going on to watch The Prince & Me. Yeah, feeling all the romance flicks right now!
